5 Months of Travel by the Numbers
My days back home would have included numbers such as hours in meetings, minutes in traffic, emails received/sent, return-on-investment, registrants and attendees, click-through rates, days went to the gym, etc. but on the road it looks a bit different.
To give an overview of what my life has entailed the last few months, take a look below at what 5 months of traveling looks like by the numbers.
Travel Duration and Destinations
It’s amazing how much time has passed, but also how much I have done in just 5 short months.

Believe it or not, I have stayed in 79 different places in the past 5 months. What a crazy way to live, am I right?

The Many Transportation Options
Europe in particular offers so many modes of transportation, but there are other types, like camel that are found more in Egypt and Morocco.
- Modes of Transportation Taken: 12 Modes of Transportation – Plane, Train, Taxi, Cars (Rented cars, friends’ cars, back of pick up trucks), Buses (intercity, city buses, minibuses), Undergrounds, Trams, Boats, Ferries, Camels, ATV, Tractor-pull
- Planes Taken: 14 Planes – including transportation to Tokyo
- Intercity Buses Taken: 47(ish) Buses
- Intercity Trains Taken: 22 (ish) Trains
The People Impact
Travel is made special by the people you meet along the way, and I have been fortunate in that I have met so many wonderful people!
- Old Friends Visited: 3 – Katka in Prague, Bianca in Berlin, Miguel in Madrid
- Visitors Had: 7 – Nelson in Vienna, Cari in Vienna and Czech Republic, Mario and Dana in Poland, Mom, Dad, and Sister in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco
- New Friends Made: Too many to count but a special shoutout to Gabi – my Brazilian travel companion for Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Egypt!
Finances and Budgeting: The Cost of Traveling 5 Months
The numbers you’re all actually interesting in – the budgetary numbers. If you’re wandering what it costs to travel for 5 months, you’re in luck. I’ve kept detailed track and will summarize it below.
Here’s how much I’ve spent so far while hopping through Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
- Dollars Spent: $8,390.19 – an average of $54.48/day including all transit and insurance
- Transportation: $2,957.24 (not including flight Madrid – Tokyo spanning Aug. 25 – 27)
- Accommodations: $2,202.59
- Food: $1,393.16
- Drinks: $291.17
- Shopping: $225.74
- Visas: $104.20
- Activities/Entrance fees: $544.71
- Other (including travel insurance and ongoing car insurance): $671.38
Additional Numbers of Interest
Turns out there are a number of other things that happen along the way. Most notably – I have worn through 3 pairs of shoes from all of the walking… if only I had how many miles those shoes had gone!

Summary of My First 5 Months of Traveling
These numbers give the high level overview of my life on the road, but the days are so much more fulfilling. New people. New places. New experiences. All the time. Long term travel is definitely not for everyone, but it is for me!
