Walking Tours in Wroclaw, Poland: An Insightful Review
Like most of Europe, Wroclaw has its fair share of city tours, from free options to paid. I love starting my time in a new city with a walking tour. It helps me get the lay of the land and learn some history and folklore that you might miss otherwise.
Best of all, taking a tour helps me determine how I want to spend the rest of my time in town. From restaurant and museums to architecture and off the beaten path recommendations – you’re sure to learn something from your tour guide. And, you can ask your local guide any questions you may have to get that first person local perspective that can be hard to find online.
So, what did I do in Wroclaw? I took a free walking tour of Wroclaw on day one. And this is my review of it, and if its worth it for you to do… or if you should consider a different kind of tour!

What is a Free Walking Tour?
Free walking tours are a bit different than your traditional city walking tours. In these tours, you take the tour and then you choose what to tip. This means you can tip what you think the walking tour was worth rather than paying up front for something that potentially disappoints you. ย
The very best part of a free walking tour is it typically means the tour guides aren’t just good, they’re great. ย From the knowledge they possess to how they present it and the bad jokes that get made, it’s sure to entertain you. ย After all, that’s how they make their money!
The main downside to a free walking tour is that you have no idea how large your tour group will be. It could be just you and the guide or it could be 50+ people! Typically the walking tour groups know how popular their tours are and will provide multiple tour guides if its a busy place, but no promises. They may also require advance booking, even though it’s a free tour.

Free Walking Tour in Wroclaw
There are a number of free walking tours in Wroclaw. Choose from Civitatis, Walkative, Wroclaw Guide, Free Tour, and more! Ultimately the one I took was through Free Tour. It starts in the main Market Square everyday. Times change, but meeting place is always at the Aleksander Fredro Statue. Check their website to book your slot… it’s free!
The Wroclaw Free Walking Tour Route
The tour starts off in the main square where you receive some basic history of the city, which for this area tends to include what survived World War II and what is new since then. The main square features some original buildings, some replica buildings, a couple of Soviet style buildings, and more.
From there you go through the next square where the flower ladies work 24 hours/day selling flowers. As my guide Lucas explained, it works out well if you’re out too late, swing by and pick up flowers and the wife or girlfriend won’t be so upset.
The next stop was to admire some architecture along the side streets including one of the many University buildings, which in Poland are public so anyone is allowed to go in and have a look, or use the toilet. ย
Fun fact: Out of the 600,000+ population in Wroclaw, 120,000 are students. That’s 1/5 people being a student! But it’s also free for Polish citizens to study at University.
The tour continues through the Italian district and to the next University where there’s a famous statue of a naked man with a sword. There is of course background on this statue, including the nobleman’s drinking and gambling problems where he bet his clothes and sword and lost, but he was able to keep his sword as a sign of nobility. (After that he gave up the drinking and gambling.) ย
From there it was on to the market and Cathedral Island to admire the five churches and cathedrals all visible from one place. Throughout the tour you hear history, learn about urban legends, and also spot dozens of Wroclaw’s famous dwarfs.
My Take on the Free Walking Tour in Wroclaw
Overall, the free walking tour through Wroclaw provides great information on the city in about two and a half hours. Walking around on your own you miss many of the finer details, like the crests, the sculptures, the oldest restaurants, the city’s folklore.
This type of tour helps fill in those gaps to give you a greater understanding of where you are, the history of that place, and what makes it unique and memorable. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and also met a number of interesting people. In fact, city tours are a great way to meet new people when traveling solo.
So should you do a free walking tour of Wroclaw? I highly recommend it, but then again, I’m sure the paid tours are also amazing and probably a little bit more intimate than the free options. Or if you’re coming with your family, you may benefit from a private walking tour of Wroclaw.
