1 Day in Budapest

1 Day in Budapest: Itinerary on the Fast Track

Budapest is one of my favorite cities in Europe. It is not only beautiful but also rich in history and culture. In fact, it keeps calling me back time and time again – partially due to its central location in Europe. This makes it easy to stop by Budapest for 1 day or to spend a full week exploring it.

Having been previously for multiple days, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to stop for 1 day in Budapest when I found myself traveling from Novi Sad to Krakow. With just one day to explore Budapest, I had to do a whirlwind tour of the city – and you can too!

Although, if you can squeeze a second, third, or even fourth day in Budapest, you will not regret it! There is plenty to see and do!

Where to Stay in Budapest

Depending on your itinerary, when you arrive and leave Budapest will likely leave you a night or two to spend in the city. This is actually perfect as it provides you a place to leave your bags while you go out exploring.

With such minimal time, you’ll want to stay in central Budapest – on the Pest side of the Danube River. That’s right, Budapest is a city separated into two different parts by the River: Buda and Pest. This interesting geographical feature is part of what adds to the city’s charm. Staying centrally on the Pest side allows you to easily explore on foot and minimize the need for transportation.

Budget Hotels in Budapest

If you’re traveling on a budget, you may want to consider staying in a hostel, like Maverick Hostel & Ensuites or Wombat’s City Hostel Budapest. For private rooms, check out Leo Boutique Rooms or Roombach Hotel Budapest Center. They won’t break the bank but offer the privacy and security you’ll want.

Mid-range Hotels in Budapest

For a mid-range alternative, Barcelo Budapest or Hotel Moments Budapest. They are both amazing and well located! This is the class of hotel that most people opt for when traveling as you’ll find the comforts and amenities you want at a price that won’t break the bank.

Luxury Hotels in Budapest

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel during your 1 night in Budapest, splurge on the Parisi Udvar Hotel Budapest or the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest. These hotels will wow you and help you get the good night’s sleep you need for your whirlwind tour of Budapest!

One Day Itinerary for Budapest

With just one day in Budapest, your itinerary will matter. You’ll want to plan your day so you can maximize what you see. I recommend starting your sightseeing further from your hotel in the Buda side of the city and then working your way back across the river to Pest.

What to See in Buda in One Day

The Buda side of Budapest is hilly and offers amazing panoramic vistas of the city – particularly of the Pest side and its intricately designed Parliament. It also is home to a number of the best sights in Budapest. You’ll want to fit in these activities if you only have one day to visit Budapest.

  • Admire Fisherman’s Bastion
  • Explore Buda Castle and get lost in its underground Labyrinth of caves and cellars
  • Visit Matthias Church

What to See in Pest in One Day

From Buda, make your way across the Danube River to the Pest side of Budapest. Here you’ll find more fabulous attractions to check out. It’s also a lot more spread out, so put your walking shoes on – or jump on the metro to get to sights that sit just a little bit further out, like Heres Square.

With limited time in Budapest, you still won’t want to miss the opportunity to:

  • Check out St. Stephen’s Basilica and catch an organ concert
  • Shop in the Central Market Hall
  • Stop at the Szechenyi Thermal Baths
  • Photograph the Parliament Building
  • Walk past the Hungarian Opera House
  • Meander through Heroes Square
  • Find the shoes on the Danube Monument
  • Visit the Great Synagogue
