Day 1: Explore the Old Town

On our first day in Vilnius, we’re going to dive into the city’s history and its lively contemporary vibe. It’s all about exploring the Old Town, wandering around, and getting a real feel for the city. Let’s get started!

Treat Yourself to Breakfast

Start your first day in Vilnius with breakfast at Holy Donut, a local bakery known for its donuts and coffee. You’ll know you’re close when the smell of freshly baked pastries fill the air. It’s great way to start your first day in Vilnius.

Head to Gediminas Hill

After breakfast, make your way to Gediminas’ Castle Tower, one of Vilnius’s most iconic landmarks and the most frequently visited branch of the National Museum of Lithuania. To get there, you can choose to either hike up the hill for a bit of exercise or take the funicular. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city.

Grab a Traditional Lithuanian Lunch

Next up, lunch. After all, donuts do not keep me full that long, and we can’t have you hungry as you explore Vilnius! I recommend heading to Bลซsi Treฤias. This little restaurant offers traditional Lithuanian dishes.

Be sure to try the local specialties, such as cepelinai (potato dumplings stuffed with meat or cheese) or kugelis (a savory potato pudding). The atmosphere and service make it a perfect place to experience Lithuanian cuisine.

Get to Know the Old Town of Vilnius

Now, it’s time to explore the enchanting Old Town of Vilnius, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll along its cobblestone streets, and take in the medieval architecture.

Be sure to visit St. Anne’s Church, which is Gothic architecture masterpiece, and make sure to duck into all of the hidden courtyards and little squares throughout the city.

In the afternoon, make your way to the Uลพupis Republic, a quirky and artistic neighborhood often compared to Montmartre in Paris. When you cross the Uลพupis Bridge, you’ll find an art installation and the famous Uลพupis Constitution. This light-hearted declaration of the district’s independence is well worth a visit and read.

Sit Down to a Delicious Dinner

Conclude your day with a delightful dinner at Lokys, a renowned restaurant in a historic building. Lokys specializes in game dishes, such as wild boar or venison, and offers an extensive selection of Lithuanian beer and mead. It’s a great place to savor the flavors of Lithuania.

Really connect with Lithuania’s complex history with a visit to the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights. It is also known as the KGB Museum and the Museum of Genocide Victims and is not for the faint of heart.

Located in a former Soviet prison, this museum provides a sobering but essential look at the country’s struggles during the Soviet occupation. You’ll gain insight into the resilience of the Lithuanian people.

In the afternoon, take a short trip to Trakai, a town about 30 minutes from Vilnius. Here you’ll find the picturesque Trakai Island Castle. This medieval fortress is located on an island in the middle of a lake.
