Here you’ll find rich history, vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and more – perfect for that mid-winter break! To make the most of your trip to PR, you’ll need to determine where to stay in San Juan. In this post, we’ll take a look at not just the best areas of San Juan to stay in, but also the best hotels in San Juan, Puerto Rico to ensure your trip is one for the best!
Being a repeat visitor to this area, time and time again, I’ve tried out most of the areas in San Juan (and beyond) to help give you better insight into what to expect in each area. After all, San Juan is one of the best winter getaways in the United States – particularly for us east coasters. It’s just one short, and often direct, flight away, and you don’t need a passport to visit as it is a US territory.
Let’s start looking at the best places to stay in San Juan!

Condado
Best area for families visiting San Juan.
If you’re traveling to San Juan for a beach vacation, plan to stay in Condado. Condado is the beachfront resort area of San Juan and features safe, walkable streets lined with tourist-friendly restaurants, casinos, and shops. You’ll also be just a short drive – or bike ride – away from historic Old San Juan.
Condado is best known for its large beach resorts, which make the perfect home-base for a family vacation. It’s also located close to the cruise port making it one of the best places to stay for cruises from Puerto Rico. The main downside to staying here is simply the cost of hotels is a bit higher than in some of the other areas, but they are beautiful, modern, safe, and offer many awesome amenities.
By staying in Condado, you’ll also be right by some of the best beaches in Puerto Rico. In just a couple minute walk you can be on beautiful Condado Beach. It’s the perfect location to enjoy the sun, surf, and sand. Unfortunately though, it’s not ideal for swimming, due to riptides. To swim, head to the neighboring beaches of Playita del Condado or Escambron Beach. If enjoying time in the water is high on your list, you’ll also find many Condado hotels offer beautiful swimming pools.
Whether you’re staying in Condado or not, don’t miss the opportunity to do a guided LED night kayak excursion on Condado Lagoon to see the bay in a completely different light (literally!). Let’s take a look at some of the best resorts in Condado, Puerto Rico!

Old San Juan
Best place to stay in San Juan for first time visitors.
El Viejo San Juan – or Old San Juan – is the cultural center of the city. Here you’ll find rich history that goes back over 500 years. In fact, many consider the historic center to be a living outdoor museum due to its fabulous architecture and deep history. To learn about the city, reserve a spot on this epic walking tour of Old San Juan.
If it’s your first time visiting San Juan, check out the amazing hotels in El Viejo San Juan. Hotels range from quaint boutiques to luxurious hotels based in restored historic buildings. This area offers the most culture of the city along with everything you need for an amazing vacation to Puerto Rico.
By just stepping out of your Old San Juan hotel, you’ll be in the midst of the best sights in San Juan as well as have fast and easy access to the top restaurants, viewpoints, shops, and bars in the city! Explore the colorful streets. Learn the history. Admire the architecture. Taste the best of the best food in Old San Juan with a food tour. Visit a salsa bar. Shop at the boutiques. Catch a sunset over the surrounding water.
In terms of downsides to staying in Old San Juan, they are limited. For one, you’ll be further from the beach than if you opt for one of the beach communities. For another, due to the highly desirable location, hotels may be a bit more expensive. But all in all, Old San Juan is the place to stay for first time visitors to Puerto Rico!

Isla Verde
Most romantic area of San Juan to stay in.
Similar to Condado, Isla Verde is an awesome resort area in San Juan. Translated as “Green Island”, Isla Verde offers a beautiful beach with palm trees and other greenery surrounding it. You’ll also find plenty of high-end resorts, high-rise condos, and luxury hotels on this beautiful strip of beach providing ample opportunity to find just the right Isla Verde hotel for a romantic vacation in San Juan.
Now let’s take a look at what sets Isla Verde apart from the other best areas of San Juan. Unlike Condado, Isla Verde’s beach is perfect for swimming and water sports. It also has companies lining hte beach that can help equip you for whatever water activity you’re looking for, whether it be a jet ski, banana boat, parasailing, or scuba diving. It’s all conveniently located!
As a fun fact, Isla Verde was voted Best Urban Beach by USA Today back in 2016. This is based on its short drive into Old San Juan so you can still take in the culture of the city. As a bonus, it’s also one of the closest areas to the San Juan airport making it the ideal place to stay in Puerto Rico to pair a beach vacation with some city fun!
Lastly, Isla Verde also offers a rich nightlife, multiple casinos, and amazing spas. Stay up all night gambling or check out the spas at the Intercontinental, Ritz-Carlton, or El San Juan Hotel if you’re really looking to treat yourself! You’ll be plenty busy when you stay in this tourist mecca!

Miramar & Convention Center Area
Best area in San Juan for business trips.
If you’re traveling to San Juan for work, chances are you’ll want to be based in the Miramar area near the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan. This prime location is connected to Old San Juan and Condado by two sets of bridges and is also closest to the Isla Grande airport. By staying in Miramar, you’ll have fast and easy access to the city and the beaches while being in the ideal spot for your business trip.
Miramar is primarily a residential neighborhood in San Juan that is home to middle and upper-class Puerto Rican families. Located right next door to Miramar is the Convention Center area. The Puerto Rico Convention Center is the largest and most technologically advanced in the Caribbean home to many conferences throughout the year.
If you’re headed to San Juan for vacation, its unlikely you’d want to stay in Miramar – despite the awesome hotels in the area simply due to its location. You will be able to enjoy the area and its fabulous houses, but you won’t be walking distance to the beach or historic Old San Juan – the two main draws to this area! For these, you’ll need to call an Uber or rent a car.
Let’s take a look at the best Miramar hotels.

Ocean Park
Best area for budget hotels in San Juan.
Ocean Park is a residential part of San Juan right next to Ocean Park Beach, a laid back beach that is most visited by local Puerto Ricans. This area is home to just a few hotels along with many Puerto Rican homes and high-rise condos. If you’re looking to stay in San Juan on a budget, Ocean Park is the perfect location as it is a bit more under the radar than other beach areas.
Staying in a less touristy area of San Juan comes with some perks. You’ll find Ocean Park Beach is a much quieter beach, typically only getting crowded on weekends and holidays. Additionally, you’ll find more affordable restaurants and some of the best cheap hotels in San Juan here. It enables you to better immerse yourself into the Puerto Rican way of life away from the tourist centric activities.
Unfortunately, staying in Ocean Park does put you a bit further from most of the key sights in the area. If you’re trying to see everything that Puerto Rico has to offer, you may want to consider renting a car versus relying on Ubers and taxis. This will give you the flexibility you need to get to Old San Juan, El Yunque, and beyond!
If you’re looking to stay in San Juan on a budget, Ocean Park is for you, or if you want to live like a local, it’s a perfect place to do that too. Here are the best Ocean Park hotels.

FAQs about Staying in San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Juan is a fabulous city and the gateway to an even more spectacular island. Find out a bit more about visiting Puerto Rico and then start making a plan for your trip! No matter where you choose to stay in San Juan, you’ll be just a short walk or Uber ride away from epic destinations.
How can you save money on places to stay in San Juan, Puerto Rico?
The three best ways to find cheap hotels in San Juan are to book well in advance, book in the off-season, and choose a lower cost area, like Ocean Park. The lowest cost season tends to be August to November due to the risk of hurricanes. Should you opt to go during this time, just ensure you book your flight with travel insurance and hotel with flexible cancellation policies. I personally love Booking.com for their cancellation policies!
What is the best area to stay in San Juan?
Ultimately, the best place to stay in San Juan is dependent on what you’re looking to do and your budget. If you can swing it, opt to stay in Condado right along the beach or in downtown Old San Juan. They’re fantastic areas for visitors!
Where should you not stay in San Juan?
Overall, San Juan is pretty safe – particularly if you stay in the tourist districts. However, there are two areas that require additional attention: Santurce and La Perla.
Generally speaking, you should not stay in the Santurce area unless it is a wild nightlife scene you are after as La Placita de Santurce is the hub of local nightlife. It can get quite busy and rowdy as the nights draw on making it less ideal for those looking for quiet, restful sleep. Alternatively, if you’re looking for the best place to stay for nightlife in San Juan – check out Santurce or Old San Juan is great too!
La Perla on the other hand is the main slum in San Juan. While it has been cleaned up a bit since the release of the Despacito music video, which was filmed there, it is best to avoid using it as your home base while visiting San Juan. Even during the day La Perla can be less safe than the other areas of San Juan, and it is encouraged to only visit with a tour guide.
When is the busy season in San Juan?
San Juan’s high season is typically from mid-November to mid-April – outside of hurricane season and coinciding with winter in the mainland of the United States. It also tends to get busy over the summer, particularly in July from all of the summer travelers. If you’re looking for cheap hotel prices in San Juan, travel in the off season!
What’s the best way to get around San Juan?
Public transportation is extremely limited in San Juan. Fortunately, if you’re staying in the San Juan area, you’ll be able to get around relying on Uber. It’s not just affordable but it’s fast, easy, and safe to get around. Many trips within the greater San Juan area will run you well under $10.
If you’re planning to travel outside of San Juan, you’ll need to rent a car. This is true even if you just want to take a day trip out of the city to the fabulous El Yunque rainforest. Alternatively, you can rely on day trips to get around outside of the city. Here are a few of the best options:
- La Parguera Glowing Bioluminescent Bay Boat Tour from San Juan
- El Yunque Rainforest Guided Hiking with Waterfall Tour
- San Juan Guided Snorkel Tour
- Full-Day Culebra and Flamenco Beach Snorkel Tour from San Juan
