Flamenco Beach is one of the most perfect beaches in Puerto Rico and the world. You’ll find soft white sand, sparkling turquoise water, swaying palm trees, and really just natural beauty that hasn’t been touched by commercial buildings and mass tourism. It is absolutely perfect!
However, getting to Flamenco Beach can be a challenge as it’s located on the remote island of Culebra in Puerto Rico, and therefore requires some planning. In this post, we’ll take a look at how to get there, what to pack, when to go, and more. Let’s dive into the details to know before you go to Flamenco Beach!

Where is Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico?
Flamenco Beach (Playa Flamenco in Spanish!) is located on Culebra Island, just 17 miles east of the Puerto Rico mainland. It’s a small island measuring about 7 miles by 5 miles and is a must visit for those traveling to Puerto Rico. Why you might ask? Well, the number one reason to visit Culebra Island is Flamenco Beach.

We’ll take a look at the best ways to get to Flamenco Beach shortly… but first, let me explain why you must visit Playa Flamenco!
Why Visit Flamenco Beach
So if Flamenco Beach is all the way on another island, why should you go through the hassle of visiting it? Really, there are many reasons to visit Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico, but here are my top four reasons I keep going back to it!
1. The Natural Beauty of Flamenco Beach
What sets Playa Flamenco apart from the other beaches in Puerto Rico is the lack of development. It is one of the most natural beaches in the area, featuring pristine sand and water without the built up amenities or hotels you’ll find in other parts of Puerto Rico.

Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico is consistently ranked one of the best beaches in the world. There’s definitely a reason why – and you’ll have to see it for your own eyes to truly understand it. Let’s be real for a minute… there is some pretty stiff competition out there, aren’t you just a little bit curious how this beach beats all those other beauties you’ve visited?
3. Uncrowded Paradise in a Remote Location
The remote location of Flamenco Beach keeps it from getting overcrowded. While on weekends many locals and tourists alike may flock to Culebra to visit Flamenco Beach, there are limited options to travel to Culebra. This keeps the island, and its primary tourist destination, from getting overcrowded. No one wants a crowded beach, and at Flamenco Beach you won’t have to fight for that precious patch of sand.
4. No Other Beach Compares
The charm of Culebra Island paired with the lack of crowds and the perfect Flamenco Beach will make you want to come back again and again. Come for the day. Spend the night. However you get here, its worth it to enjoy the pristine beauty of Puerto Rico’s Flamenco Beach! Unfortunately, once you get a taste, you too will be drawn to return as no other beach will meet your high expectations.

How to Get to Flamenco Beach
Since Flamenco Beach is located off the mainland of Puerto Rico on Culebra Island, you have limited options on how to get there. Take a look at the many options you have, and remember the most important piece of the puzzle is to book early! Things do fill up – particularly on weekends or during peak travel seasons.
Traveling from Puerto Rico to Culebra
You ultimately have four ways you can get to Culebra Island from Puerto Rico’s mainland:
- Book the Ceiba to Culebra ferry ahead of time online. This is the cheapest way to get to Flamenco Beach, but it is also one of the hardest ways due to the limited supply of ferry tickets.
- Fly to Culebra from San Juan or Ceiba on one of the many airlines available. If you can’t get ferry tickets, this is a great alternative – and the views while flying into Culebra are amazing.
- Select a day trip to Culebra Island. If you’re short on time or don’t want to deal with the logistics, the best way to visit Flamenco Beach is to take a day trip from mainland Puerto Rico. All the details are handled for you so you just get to sit back and relax!
- Take the inter-island ferry from Vieques to Culebra. While this ferry route runs very rarely, you can catch a ferry from nearby Vieques Island to Culebra. It’s really only a great option if you’re headed to both islands during your time in Puerto Rico and the ferry is running.

Day Trips to Flamenco Beach
One of the easiest ways to visit Flamenco Beach is by taking one of the many day trips to Culebra Island from the mainland. You can choose to go directly from San Juan or head to Ceiba, the closest point on the mainland, and then continue on to Culebra, Flamenco Beach.
All of the day trips to Culebra will take you to Flamenco Playa as it is the number one attraction on Culebra. Here are the three best options for Flamenco Beach day trips:
- Flamenco Beach day trip from San Juan which includes flights
- Kayak and snorkel adventure from Ceiba which includes ferry tickets
Transportation on Culebra to Flamenco Beach
If you’re taking a day trip to Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico, they’ll handle all the transportation for you. However, if you’re taking the ferry or flying into Culebra, you’ll need your own transportation to get from the ferry terminal or airport to Flamenco Beach.
Upon arrival, the best option to get to Flamenco Beach is to rent a car or golf cart on Culebra. Distances are a little far to walk, taxis are extremely limited, and ride shares do not operate here. Plan to pay at least $60/day for your rental. This often is actually over $100/day.
Two of the most popular car rentals on Culebra are Jerry’s Jeep Rental and Carlos Jeep Rental. Both also rent out golf carts. I’ve rented from both and had no issues. Just make sure to book ahead of time as there is limited supply and they do run out – particularly in peak season and weekends!
Driving to Flamenco Beach
To find Flamenco Beach, I recommend you download offline maps before you arrive on Culebra. Cell service and wifi can be spotty at times, and this way you won’t be reliant on them. My favorite option is Maps.me, but Google Maps is also available for offline maps.
Another option is to grab a map from your rental car office – although these seem to be overly simplistic and difficult to follow sometimes.
To get to Flamenco Beach from town, take highway 250 to Carlos Jeep Rental, then veer left to continue on highway 251 until you hit the Flamenco Beach Parking Area. This is the entrance to Flamenco Beach.
Parking at Flamenco Beach
Upon arrival at Flamenco Beach, you will need to pay for parking – whether you have a golf cart or a car rental. Parking costs $5 per vehicle and then there’s a $2 fee per person to use the amenities at Puerto Rico Flamenco Beach.
Amenities for Flamenco Beach Culebra
Beyond parking at the beach, there are a few key amenities available for those visiting Flamenco Beach. Remember, it’s not a built up area, it’s actually pretty rustic, but there are the key amenities you need for a beach day.
Bathrooms at Flamenco Beach
The number one need at the beach… bathrooms! There are indeed a few bathrooms located at Flamenco Beach, so you really can spend the whole day and not have to leave. Some even include changing areas and showers to rinse off.
At this time, they are also working on expanding their facilities… you’ll see the construction when you arrive, but don’t worry, it’s not directly on the beach.
Rental Chairs and Umbrellas
Since you’re coming to Culebra for just a day or two on the limited transportation options, you likely won’t want to carry a lot of beach equipment with you. They’re actually betting on that as they offer both rental chairs and umbrellas at the beach.
You can try to negotiate on price, but they typically charge $10/chair and $20/umbrella. If you’re planning to spend the day at Flamenco Beach, it’s worth the price of the umbrella as the sun is brutal here! The other option (and my personal favorite), is to use the natural surroundings, like palm trees, for shade.
If you get there early enough, you can stake your claim to a naturally shaded space and enjoy the wind blowing through the palm fronds above you.
Rental Snorkel Equipment
If you like snorkeling, Play Flamenco, Puerto Rico is a great place to give it a go. There are reefs located right off of the beach. You can either pack your own snorkel equipment or rent it from the vendors onsite. We’ll discuss where to snorkel at Flamenco Beach in just a bit.
Food and Drink on Flamenco Beach
Among the limited Flamenco Beach amenities are food kiosks. While I highly recommend bringing a cooler with some drinks and snacks, you don’t have to. There are kiosks at Flamenco Beach that serve all kinds of snacks and drinks to keep you hydrated (or liquored up) and from being ravenous.
That being said, they are just food stands. Check out the pictures. You’ll find empanadas, chips, and other grab and go foods – not restaurants. They also offer mixed drinks and beer at Flamenco Beach.
If you plan to rely on these, I recommend not wandering too far down the beach so you can easily visit when you’re empty and need another!
What to Do at Flamenco Beach
Spending a day at Flamenco Beach comes full of opportunities.
The first time I went to Culebra was during summer and the beach had some seaweed and was a bit crowded, but it still captured my heart. My friends and I explored Culebra Island pretty thoroughly, and Flamenco Beach really is the best beach on the island. Trust me.
The next time I went was during winter, and the beach was perfectly clear with almost no seaweed, and it was far more vacant. However, the weather was perfect, the water was warm, and the island was still in full swing.
No matter when you plan to visit Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico, spend a large part of your time on Culebra at this beautiful beach. Relax. Snorkel. Explore. Drink. Eat. Really do whatever floats your boat! Let’s cover the primary things to do at Flamenco Beach.
Find the Perfect Place to Sit
When you first arrive at Playa Flamenco, you will want to stake out where you’re going to spend the day. If you’re planning to rent a chair and umbrella or rely heavily on the amenities (bathrooms or food kiosks) you may want to find a place to sit close to the entrance. Otherwise, head to either the right or left.
I recommend turning left once you enter the beach and heading down a bit to find a palm tree to sit under. You’ll have natural shade, be close to the coral reefs, and be just a short walk to the famous painted tanks of Culebra Island. What more could you want?
Go Snorkeling at Flamenco Beach
Located just off the beach, you’ll find a couple of pretty cool coral reefs, which are great for snorkeling Flamenco Beach. The first is located to the left of the entrance of the beach. You’ll be able to see it through the clear water as it is located just off the coast making it an easy and shallow swim.
If you choose to try this reef, you’ll find plenty of fish, some coral, and even potentially sharks, rays, dolphins, and turtles! We got lucky here seeing sharks and rays. It was actually pretty solid snorkeling considering its just off shore.
Another awesome place for Flamenco Beach snorkeling is down to the far right of the beach entrance. Follow the sand to where it ends and rock begins. This is the best snorkeling in Flamenco Beach. It’s called “Shark Cages” or “Muellecito” by the locals.
You’ll need to be careful how you enter and exit for this reef as it does come up almost all of the way to the beach. Enter between the rows of concrete and rocks and then go around them to the right. Here you’ll also have great snorkeling and the ability to see some of the larger animals as it does get deeper than the other reef on Flamenco Beach.
Search Down the Painted Tanks
If you haven’t heard about the famous painted tanks of Flamenco Beach Culebra, you’re about to! Culebra Island used to be a US naval base and to this day there are a few abandoned tanks located on the island.
To find one of the most photographed tanks in Culebra, turn left as you enter the beach and walk until you see a painted tank sitting in the shallow water near the end of the beach. The walk to get there is short (and stunning) – no more than 20 minutes.
Upon arrival, you may want to wade into the water to take a picture with it, or on it, or you may just want to admire it from the beach. If you do choose to climb onto it, be careful as it is heavily rusted and made of jagged metal.
There is also a second tank just off of the beach. It’s in between the beach entrance and the painted tank in the water. This Flamenco Beach tank is located in the trees and brush just before you hit the painted tank in the water.

What to Pack for Flamenco Beach
If you’re heading to Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico, be prepared to carry whatever you will need with you, as amenities are limited. After all, it’s located on a small remote island. You also won’t want to overpack as you will be carrying it with you most of the time. Here are the key items to throw in your beach bag.
- Go Pro with a floating handle: Capture those underwater memories and sights!
- Snorkel gear: Make the most of the snorkeling in Flamenco Beach.
- Waterproof phone case: If the beach is busy, you may want to be able to take your phone and other valuables with you into the water.
- Reef-safe sunscreen: Please protect your skin. Rent the umbrella. Wear the sunscreen.
- Bug spray: Being a tropical island, Culebra does have its fair share of mosquitos. Pack bug spray to protect yourself.
- Cash and credit card: You’ll need cash to pay for parking, but it’s worth keeping a credit card and cash on hand for any additional needs at the island or on the beach.
- Quick dry beach towel: We all know why you need a towel at the beach…
- Cooler full of snacks and food: While there are some kiosks offering food and drink at Flamenco Beach, the lines can be long and the walk to the kiosks can be longer. Pack a cooler to keep you well fed and hydrated all day.
Where to Stay near Flamenco Beach
Being located on the small island of Culebra, the best place to stay for Flamenco Beach is really anywhere on Culebra Island. This will put you a short drive away from this pristine PR beach.
