Meet Duck, NC: My Favorite Town in the Outer Banks

Living in North Carolina, I always heard about how amazing the Outer Banks are, and I have to say after years of coming here – sometimes for a month at a time, I have to agree. My home away from home? The tiny coastal town of Duck, NC.

While many visitors stay in the larger, more well-known Outer Banks towns like Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills, the coastal town of Duck offers a quieter, more scenic alternative. It’s quite laid-back with stunning waterfront views, a long walkable boardwalk, and easy access to the top Outer Banks attractions.

Where is Duck, NC?

Duck is located on the northern end of North Carolina’s Outer Banks (OBX), a 200-mile-long string of barrier islands that separate the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland. Specifically, Duck sits between Southern Shores to the south and Corolla to the north along NC Highway 12, also known as the “Beach Road.”

Unlike some of the busier OBX towns, Duck has no overly commercialized boardwalks or high-rise hotels. Instead, it offers almost a mile long wooden boardwalk on the sound side, a walkable city center filled with locally owned shops and restaurants, and beautiful vacation rentals.

The town is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Currituck Sound on the other, giving you access to both long sandy beaches and calm waters perfect for kayaking or paddleboarding.

If you’re not familiar with the Outer Banks, we’ll talk more about them, but they’re a barrier island chain on the east coast of North Carolina. This makes them stand out from other beaches in North Carolina.

An Introduction to the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks in North Carolina are one of the most unique coastal destinations in the U.S.. They are best known for their natural beauty and fascinating history.

The islands are home to wild horses in Corolla, towering sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, and the site of the Wright brothers’ first flight in Kitty Hawk. (Admittedly, being from Dayton, Ohio originallyl, where the Wright brothers were born – this place was quite interesting to me!)

The OBX also has a rich maritime history, with hundreds of shipwrecks earning it the nickname “The Graveyard of the Atlantic.” While these might top the reasons to come to the Outer Banks, you’ll find the area also offers:

Miles of unspoiled beaches perfect for lounging, swimming, or surfing.

Water sports and eco-adventures, from kiteboarding to dolphin tours.

Beautiful coastal towns with local seafood restaurants, boutiques, and lighthouses.

Why Choose Duck as Your Outer Banks Base?

If you’re into the more touristy beach areas, you may want to stay in Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head to be close to the action. These towns are convenient, particularly for families who want the mini golf, ropes courses, and laser tag, but they can also be crowded, especially during peak season.

Duck, on the other hand, offers a quieter, more relaxed vacation without sacrificing access to the best of the Outer Banks. Here’s why I love coming to Duck, time and time again.

1. A Quiet, Upscale Community

Duck has a reputation for being one of the Outer Banks’ most relaxed and family-friendly towns. Unlike some of the larger OBX towns, Duck has no chain restaurants, no big hotels, and no noisy nightlife. Instead, you’ll find:

Private vacation homes and one upscale, boutique resort – the Sanderling Resort – rather than large hotels.

Walkable streets, bike paths, and a long waterfront boardwalk along the sound.

A friendly community of locals and visitors. We’re talking families, couples, singles, and of course their dogs.

2. Easy Access to Outer Banks Attractions

Duck may feel secluded while you’re there, but it’s actually conveniently located for exploring the entire Outer Banks. From here, you can reach:

The Wright Brothers National Memorial (20 minutes south): Learn about the world’s first powered flight in Kitty Hawk.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park (25 minutes south): Climb the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast or try hang gliding.

Corolla’s Wild Horses (25 minutes north): Take a 4WD tour to see the famous Spanish mustangs who live on the beach.

Roanoke Island & Manteo (45 minutes south): Visit the Lost Colony site and the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens.

Hatteras Island & Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (1.5 hours south): Explore the famous lighthouse and enjoy a scenic coastal drive down the Outer Banks.

Duck’s central location means you can enjoy day trips to all of these top Outer Banks spots while returning to a peaceful beach town each evening.

3. Some of the Best Dining & Shopping in the Outer Banks

Now, I may be biased having spent so much time in Duck, but for a small town, Duck has a surprisingly strong food scene. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood, craft cocktails, or casual waterfront dining, Duck has plenty of options.

A few of my favorites include:

Aqua Restaurant: A great spot for fresh seafood and sunset over the sound. Don’t miss their Gingered Pear Martini. It’s delicious.

Coastal Cantina: A casual waterfront bar and restaurant serving family-friendly Mexican food, margaritas, and pitchers of beer. It’s perfect for sunset in Duck! (Only open in summer)

Duck Donuts: The original location of this now-famous custom donut shop.

Coastal Cravings: A casual seafood shack known for its crab cakes and steamer pots. I personally am a big fan of their coconut shrimp.

Duck is also home to The Waterfront Shops, a collection of boutiques, art galleries, and specialty stores. Here, you can browse for everything from handmade jewelry and dozens of olive oil flavors to Outer Banks souvenirs.

4. Perfect for Outdoor Lovers

If you follow along with The Cure for Curiosity, you probably already know I love the outdoors. I’m talking hiking, biking, swimming. (Yes, this has led me to doing triathlons in the past.) Duck is perfect for people like me as it is surrounded by natural beauty.

Here are some of the best parts of Duck:

Private Beaches: Duck’s beaches are private (access is limited to those staying in town), so they’re much less crowded than public OBX beaches.

Watersports on the Currituck Sound: There’s plenty of options for getting out on the sound: Rent a kayak or paddleboard, or take a sunset boat cruise.

The Duck Boardwalk: The almost mile long wooden boardwalk in Duck stretches along the sound, perfect for a morning walk or evening stroll… I recommend both!

Biking & Jogging Trails: The town has a paved path running along NC-12, making it easy to bike or jog around town. If you’re up for an adventure, you can bike all the way up and down the Outer Banks!

5. Dog-Friendly Travel

Lastly, one of the other reasons I have friends who live in Duck is it is one of the most dog-friendly towns in the Outer Banks and one of the most dog-friendly beaches in North Carolina. The town’s beaches allow dogs off-leash year-round, and many local businesses welcome four-legged visitors with open arms.

If you bring your dog to Duck, make sure to stop in Outer Barks. This dog-friendly store is the place to go for all things dogs, including homemade dog treats. From Easter to Thanksgiving they also host “Yappy Hour”, a weekly dog social with free treats for your furry friends! Don’t worry, they also have human treats and drinks available for purchase.

Is Duck Right for You?

If you’re looking for the tourist center or a budget-friendly stay, Duck might not be the best fit. Towns like Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills have more of the hotels in the Outer Banks and classic entertainment options like Myrtle Beach or Virginia Beach. However, if you want a peaceful, upscale, and scenic home base with easy access to the best of the Outer Banks, Duck is the perfect choice.

With its long, wide beaches, sound side boardwalk, fantastic dining, and central location, Duck offers the everything you need for a great beach trip. I’d go so far as to consider Duck a hidden gem in the Outer Banks. Stop by and see for yourself!
