2 Days in Taichung: Exploring the 3rd Largest City in Taiwan
Find out how to spend 2 days in Taichung, Taiwan with this helpful 48 hour itinerary that takes you through the highlights of the city.
Taichung, Taiwan’s third-largest city, is located between the capital Taipei and the scenic beauty of the central mountains in Taiwan. It’s known for its slower pace of life compared to the capital and has recently emerged as a must-visit destination for both local and international travelers.
While the city is not known as a tourist center, it is home to a wide range of attractions that range from traditional temples and parks to cutting-edge modern architecture and street art. Whether you’re drawn to the city’s culinary scene, artistic vibes, or simply stopping by on your way through Taiwan, you’ll enjoy spending 48 hours in Taichung.
Now lets get into it. This 2-day itinerary for Taichung is designed to help you explore the best of the city without feeling rushed. From historic sites and cultural landmarks to night markets and the wetlands, this itinerary provides a perfect balance of exploration, relaxation, and delicious food – after all, Taiwan offers amazing food markets!

Day 1 in Taichung
Your first day in Taichung will focus on the city’s most important cultural and natural highlights. If you only have one day in Taichung, this is where I’d start planning your itinerary. It will give you the highlights of the city and take you on a tour around town and to the famous night market of Taichung.
Start Your Day with Breakfast at Miyahara
Start your day with a unique breakfast experience at Miyahara. This stunning building was once an ophthalmology clinic and now houses a famous restaurant and ice cream shop. Enjoy a traditional Taiwanese breakfast before indulging in some of the most decadent ice cream flavors. Yes – I recommend ice cream for breakfast because I’m an adult!
It opens at 10am (check its hours online) so no need to start your day in Taichung too early!
Enjoy Taichung Park
After breakfast, head to Taichung Park, one of the city’s oldest and most beloved parks. Take a leisurely stroll around the lake, visit the historic pavilion, and soak in the park’s atmosphere. I personally find visiting parks in cities a great way to rejuvenate after hours of travel and being surrounded by people.
Stop at the National Taichung Theater
Next, visit the National Taichung Theater. This modern architectural marvel was designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito. The theater’s unique design makes it a must-visit in Taichung. If you have time, join a guided tour to learn about the theater’s design and construction.
Visit Yizhong Street for a Street Food Lunch
For lunch, head to Yizhong Street. This street is home to the city’s street food scene. Try local favorites like braised pork rice, stinky tofu, and bubble tea. Find a place to have a seat and enjoy your food while taking in the busy road and people watching.
Head to Rainbow Village
After lunch, make your way to the Rainbow Village. This colorful and quirky art installation was created by an elderly veteran known as “Rainbow Grandpa.” The murals and whimsical designs offer plenty of photo opportunities and insight into Taiwan’s history. You’ll quickly understand why it’s one of the top places to go in Taichung.
Visit Tunghai University and Luce Chapel
Next, visit Tunghai University. This picturesque campus is famous for the iconic Luce Chapel. Beyond the chapel, you’ll also get to enjoy the university’s rolling hills and tree-lined paths. It’s the perfect place for an afternoon walk.
Eat Dinner at Fengjia Night Market
After a busy first day, you’ll be excited to know you’ve saved the best for last. You’ll be ending your day at Fengjia Night Market, one of Taiwan’s largest and most famous night markets. Let’s be honest, I’m a sucker for a night market – especially one with all kinds of foods I’ve never seen.
Here you can try a wide variety of Taiwanese street foods, shop for souvenirs, and experience one of the best local experiences in Taichung. Don’t miss trying the local specialty, “Fengjia’s Big Sausage”, and if you’re not sure what else to try… jump in the longest line. It has to be good!
Day 2 in Taichung
On your second day in Taichung, you’ll take a deeper dive into the city that many travelers just skim the surface of.
Have Breakfast at Fourth Credit Union
Begin your second day with a hearty breakfast at Fourth Credit Union. This trendy cafe is located in a historic building and is surprisingly delicious. Enjoy their famous pastries (and ice cream) before heading out for a day of exploration.
Check Out the National Museum of Natural Science
Spend the morning exploring the National Museum of Natural Science, one of Taiwan’s top museums. From interactive exhibits on biology, earth sciences, and astronomy to a walk through a tropical rainforest greenhouse, this museum offers a fun experience for all ages.
Walk along the Calligraphy Greenway
After the museum, take a walk down Calligraphy Greenway. This urban parkway connects the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts to the Civic Square. The area is dotted with sculptures, art installations, and cafes, making it an ideal spot for a walk.
Grab Lunch at Chun Shui Tang
It might feel like you just ate, but its time to enjoy more food! That’s because no trip to Taichung is complete without visiting Chun Shui Tang, the birthplace of bubble tea. Here you can enjoy an authentic Taiwanese lunch here, and of course, indulge in their famous bubble tea. Taiwan is where I first learned to love bubble tea, and now I can’t break the habit… but it was worth it!
Tour the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts
After lunch, visit the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. This is Taiwan’s first and largest modern art museum. The museum houses an impressive collection of contemporary Taiwanese art, as well as rotating international exhibitions. Take your time exploring the galleries and the outdoor sculpture garden.
Wrap Up Your Day at Gaomei Wetlands
End your day with a trip to the Gaomei Wetlands. This scenic coastal area offers stunning sunsets in a different setting. Here you can walk along wooden boardwalks, watch the sunset, and check out the diverse birdlife in Taiwan. This is a perfect way to wind down your 48 hour itinerary in Taichung.
Where to Stay in Taichung
Finding the right place to stay in Taichung is key to making the most of your visit. With just a couple days in Taichung, I recommend staying in the Central District. This area is the heart of Taichung, making it an ideal base for first-time visitors.
Staying here means you’re within walking distance of many of the city’s top attractions, such as Taichung Park, Miyahara, and Yizhong Street. The area is also well-connected by public transportation, making it easy to explore other parts of the city.

Seeing Taichung in 2 days is definitely possible, and I would say the right amount of time to devote to the city. If you’re in a rush, you can certainly see the highlights in one day, or you can take your time and spread it out over three or more days. After all, it is the third largest city in the country!
While I can’t say its my favorite part of Taiwan, it is a through point to get from place to place. As such, its worth stopping by to see the highlights. The main reason I recommend staying overnight is to enjoy the Fengjia night market – it was my favorite place in Taichung!
